Working in UV......so far

A lot of people have been asking me what I do in United Voice. I alwiz tell them that I'm the tealady there!! hahahaha ok ok seriously..... I'm the "Administrator & IT Coordinator" there.Other than admin stuff, I'm also in charge of maintaining the computers, give computer lessons to UV members, organise events, help out in correspondence and any other stuff that Swee Lan pass to me. oh and I also help out in the Employment Project if they need any help.

So far I've organised & clean up the computers there, organise files, updated the membership database, written a proposal to Samsung Digital Grant (we've actually got the grant. RM34,000 to buy computers and other stuff. I was jokingly telling Swee Lan that if the Samsung people dun give us the grant I'm going to start calling them "Samseng"! ngahahaha), help organise a trip to Penang for UV members, work with Eugene Lau(the ex-Public Relation Officer of UV, yes he has resign last year in december) on correspondence and help put glitters on a lot of festive cards for EP.

We've also had the 1st National Seminar on Self-Advocacy for persons with Learning Disabilities which UV co-organised with UM, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), JKM(Welfare Department) and JPK(Special Ed Department). As usual I was doing all the clicking for the powerpoint slides presentations.

I have to tell you the truth. When Swee Lan first offer me the position, I did not even pray and ask God if I should work in UV. Everyone kept asking me to pray and see if its God’s calling. I find it very funny. God is always calling us. Why do we still need to pray and ask Him again and again? I’m imagining that when we pray “dear Father in heaven, is it my calling to blah blah blah…” and God is like slapping his forehead with his hand going ”adoi!! I’ve been telling you again & again YES and you are still asking me the same question?!” hahaha….
I was thinking that I don’t want to do this just because I’m a Christian. I’m doing it because I’m a human being. Would I be even thinking of working in an NGO if I’m not a Christian? That's one of the reason I choose UV. It's not a christian organisation. It's help me to be more open minded. Am I a blessing to persons with learning disabilities or is it the other way round? These are special people. Do you know that persons with Down Syndrome actually has an extra chromosome. That is what makes them so special. God puts them on earth so that they can teach us how to become humans. How cool is that?

I’m having a wonderful time at UV. Of course not everyday is flowery working there. Things that I dislike doing, like correspondence, dealing with parents, updating database, writing proposals and thank you letters, I’m actually doing it a lot at UV. God certainly has a great sense of humour. I think I have a lot of patience but sometimes my patience is being tested there. Apparently God is teaching me to be extra extra extra patience. My new journey has just begun and I'm loving every step of it.
